Egypt must seriously investigate arrest and torture of Sudanese nationals as part of a systematic campaign within the security forces of targeting the Sudanese

In its latest report on the arrest and torture of Yehia Zakareya, the Center for Refugee Solidarity has found strong evidence that the Egyptian security forces are systematically targeting Sudanese nationals. The arrest and torture of Sudanese nationals within Egypt can be seen to be symptomatic of a wider culture of racism towards the Sudanese, that prevails within Egyptian society.

EGYPT: Immediately and Unconditionally release Youssef Mohamed Aden

On the 24th December 2015, the Center received an appeal from Youssef Aden to save him. At about 4:00 am (EET) , Egyptian Police officers entered Youssef's cell, handcuffed him, and took him, along with other African refugees, to the Tahrir complex in Cairo and issued a “Movement Certificate” to prove that he entered Egypt in an illegal way, in order to “legally” detain him. Youssef was charged and then transferred to “Qanater Prison” in Cairo, where his mobile phone was confiscated. He now he has no contact with anyone, and the Center is unable to know anything about his whereabouts or wellbeing.

EGYPT: Increase in serious human rights violations of Sudanese nationals

Since the beginning of October Egyptian security forces have arrested and detained hundreds of Sudanese nationals, bringing forth claims of Egyptian forces systematically targeting Sudanese nationals. Yehia Zakareya, who came to Egypt on a tourist visa for a surgery for his son, has spoken out on social media about the misconduct of the security forces and the violent abuse he suffered under their detention. This comes following an incident on Sunday 15th November, where 15 Sudanese nationals were killed by Egyptian police forces trying to cross from Egypt to Israel.

منذ مطلع أكتوبر قامت قوات الأمن المصرية بتوقيف واحتجاز مئات المواطنين السودانيين، لتظهر ادعاءات ومزاعم عديدة باستهداف القوات المصرية للمواطنين السودانيين بشكل ممنهج. يحيى زكريا الذي قدم إلى مصر بتأشيرة سياحة لإجراء جراحة لابنه، تحدث على مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي عن إساءة قوات الأمن إليه والعنف الذي كابده أثناء احتجازه. يأتي هذا في أعقاب واقعة يوم الأحد الموافق 15 نوفمبر/تشرين الثاني، عندما قتلت قوات الشرطة المصرية 15 مواطناً سودانياً أثناء محاولتهم عبور الحدود إلى إسرائيل

 مركز التضامن مع اللاجئين بجانب 15 منظمة حقوقية, يدعون الحكومة المصرية لانهاءالاحتجاز التعسفي للاجئين

منذ التاسع من فبراير 2015 بدأ 30 لاجيء سوري وفلسطيني وصومالي على الأقل إضرابا عن الطعام في قسم شرطة كرموز بالاسكندرية احتجاجا على اعتقالهم العشوائي واستمرار احتجازهم بعد أن أصدرت وزارة الداخلية قرارا بترحيلهم وذلك رغم قرارات النائب العام بخلاء سبيلهم، الأمر الذي يعرض حياتهم للخطر في حال أصرت السلطات المصرية على استمرار اعتقالهم بدون اتهامات في قسم شرطة كرموز. هذا البيان يطالب الحكومة المصرية بالافراج الفوري عن جميع اللاجئين المحتجزين بدون اتهامات في قسم شرطة كرموز بالاسكندرية

Joint Statement - Rights Groups Call on Egypt to End Arbitrary Detention of Refugees

The Center for Refugee Solidarity, together with 15 rights groups, call on Egypt to end arbitrary detention of refugees.

Since February 9, 2015 a group of at least 30 Syrian, Palestinian-Syrian and Somali refugees detained at Karmooz police station in Alexandria - Egypt, began an open hunger strike to protest against their arbitrary detention. The refugees have been kept in continuous detention after receiving a deportation order by Egypt's Homeland Security agency, despite an earlier order by the Public Prosecutor to release them. The lives of the hunger strikers will be put at grave risk if the Egyptian authorities continue to arbitrarily detain them. This statement calls on the Egyptian government to act now and immediately release all refugees held without charges at Karmooz Police Station in Alexandria.

UPDATED - Egypt: End arbitrary detentions of refugees

UPDATED - As of February 27, 2015, 20 refugees detained at Karmooz police station have put an end to their hunger strike, while 32 refugee remain on hunger strike. According to information communicated to the Center for Refugee Solidarity, the decision to suspend the hunger strike came after the refugees received assurances from the UNHCR's office in Egypt that it will work to find a solution to their situation.
